Fort Hill Park, Lowell

Fort Hill in Lowell, MA, was literally just that at one time: a fort built by local Indians to protect against raids from the Mohawk tribe. The central hill serves as the highest point of the surrounding area, making it an ideal defensive position, so it is not difficult to imagine it as a fortress. Today it is the locus of a public park, having been deeded to the city by a local family some hundred years ago.
