Fort Hill in Lowell, MA, was literally just that at one time: a fort built by local Indians to protect against raids from the Mohawk tribe. The central hill serves as the highest point of the surrounding area, making it an ideal defensive position, so it is not difficult to imagine it as a fortress. Today it is the locus of a public park, having been deeded to the city by a local family some hundred years ago. 

The A - House Bar

This establishment - the Atlantic House Bar - was once a popular writer's watering hole in Provincetown, having been favored by luminaries of the day like Eugene O'Neill, John Dos Passos, and Tennessee Williams.  Still very much in business, it  also lays claim to being the oldest gay bar in the United States.

This is the same porch made famous - in photography circles - by Joel Meyerowitz nearly 40 years ago. For me it was a combination of luck and premeditation that enabled me to catch the light at just the right moment one evening last July. A moment later the light was gone, as if someone had thrown a switch.
